We are really enjoying the white city of Popayan. The reason it’s painted white is because, when it was settled in the sixteenth century, people couldn’t walk in the streets without getting bitten by ticks. So they painted the buildings with lime wash to get rid of the ticks, and it is now traditional to repaint them before Semana Santa, which is extremely big here. One of the UNESCO awards was for food, and the other was for the city itself. So here are some examples of each.

I’m absolutely sure the honey was ‘puro puro’ though we didn’t try it. We’re still astonished by the range, quality and just general deliciousness of the fruits – what a wonderful place.

The champous was indeed delicious – a sort of exotic pear like fruit, the juice laced with cinnamon
