Popayan – the city with two UNESCO awards

We are really enjoying the white city of Popayan. The reason it’s painted white is because, when it was settled in the sixteenth century, people couldn’t walk in the streets without getting bitten by ticks. So they painted the buildings with lime wash to get rid of the ticks, and it is now traditional to repaint them before Semana Santa, which is extremely big here. One of the UNESCO awards was for food, and the other was for the city itself. So here are some examples of each.

Salpicón Payanés – lulos, soursop and blackberry
Pipian – a kind of peanut sauce; champús – another local drink with maize and pineapple
8,000=less than £2

  1. Looks lovely, looks a bit like some of the coastal cities of East Africa. The third image is a bit ‘The Birds’…..

    1. Well, you know what pigeons are like – they just suddenly set off swirling in a group for no particular reason. The city was very elegant – high class colonial

  2. Oh the nostalgia of it all! You’ve had me rushing back to my 1977 diary, and spending too long reading it! Did you try the San Agustin honey? My notes say “puro, puro”! Can’t wait to hear more… when we meet. Safe journey home xx

    1. I’m absolutely sure the honey was ‘puro puro’ though we didn’t try it. We’re still astonished by the range, quality and just general deliciousness of the fruits – what a wonderful place.
