Up against the Greek border

We drove round the south-eastern end of Albania yesterday, stopping from time to time to give me a break and to view the sights – not so many – on the way. It’s really hot now – expected to be 34 in Girokaster, our current base today – and our car doesn’t have great air conditioning, so the six-hour drive was quite punishing. We’re listening to Monica Ali’s ’Love Marriage’ so we were able to cover quite a few chapters. But as ever, the journey was interesting.

We stopped in a little town, Erseka, to look at the monument outside the museum – look carefully and you’ll see alphabet man, kilted warriors and the Communist star on the Albanian flag.

We stopped also at a very sad memorial for the Massacre of Borsova. After a partisan attack in 1943, the Wehrmacht returned to the village and slaughtered over a hundred of the villagers, many burnt alive in the church.
We carried on down a lonely, twisty and poorly surfaced road to the border with Greece to eat car snacks and admire yet more wildflowers:

And we took a little video for you – Greece is on the other side of the river and it’s very close to where we were in October:

And then, oh joy, we came across a road being freshly tarred – and from then on, our mountain journey was at least smooth and beautifully cambered with astonishing views out the window:

We’re up and out early today to make the steep climb to the castle – so more later!
