The Sarai: Part 1 – the Ken River

We’re rather behind on the blog after an entire day on a train (worth its own story) and a full-on day in Varanasi but we wanted to post about the most beautiful and peaceful place we’ve been to in India. The Sarai’s owners, Joanna and Raghu, are so charming, thoughtful and knowledgeable, giving us the warmest welcome and looking after us so well.

It is difficult to convey the beauty of the place but let’s start with the Ken river which the Sarai overlooks. We had a boat ride late in the afternoon (with sun!), punted along its clean, shallow waters by an expert boatman. There was much to see:

The reeds:

Kingfishers – all sorts:

Wild peacocks hanging about in gangs:

A jungle cat!

Assorted birds as ever:

Fishermen floating on rubber tyres:

Buffalo and goats come down to feed:

And there has to be a sunset:

More about the Sarai and a pottery-buying expedition to come tomorrow!

  1. The boat trip must be my favourite part of Sarai. It’s so peaceful (and clean!). The boatman knows the river so well he can find all the birds! And I must have loads of that sunset picture!

    1. It was really magical and the sun came out a little just to give everything a special touch of colour.

    1. It was extraordinarily quiet – any sound ( people having a loud conversation on the bank say) carried very clearly across the river.

  2. Loved this. With such perfectly glassy water and the bounty of gorgeous birds, I was surprised there weren’t other touring boats about – perhaps lurking just outside of your shots?

    1. Not a soul! Just two fishermen on tyres and the occasional person with their goats or buffalo….and loads of cormorants.

    1. Yes, so quiet with just the sound of the paddle in the water and that beautiful ( if rarely seen) sun..
