Tbilisi pleasures

We’re back in Tbilisi as close followers of the blog will have noticed from the opening shot of street art. This time, we made it to the national museum of Georgia which houses the most amazing collection of Georgian gold (remember the Colchis fountain back in Kutaisi which is based on some of these antiquities?).

The finesse is quite a contrast with the blingy statue that replaced Lenin’s in Liberty Square:

To our amazement, we managed to be here for the biggest Tbilisi event of the year – its birthday. The streets have been thronged with stalls selling barbecued meat, stages playing live music (well, mostly doing sound checks) and everyone dressed up for the day. We were particularly impressed by the footwear of the young women (Rosalind – you wanted to know what they were wearing) so enjoy a few scenes of today.

  1. Now all you need is a concert of Georgian dancing, they have a major training school in Tblisi.

    1. I’m sure if we’d stayed for a few more hours or indeed had found a programme of events, there would definitely have been dancing! Maybe next time.

    1. Indeed! Felt like a different city! We feel we may have given a rather unfair impression of Tblisi in our earlier comments ( but we were still mourning our lost luggage)..

  2. My, boots really are in this season in Tbilisi this autumn, aren’t they? Pardon my ignorance but what is a cha-cha?

    1. They are indeed! I particularly liked the ones folded back down to the ankles. Chacha is a Georgian eau de vie – very strong, usually home made and not at all predictable. M and I didn’t try it but Nikhil was always hoping to find the perfect, delicious chacha ( with varying degrees of success).
