It’s time for the quiz!

Some of our loyal subscribers have asked if there’ll be a quiz this time – and the answer is: of course! We’ve been saving up possible candidates for questions since we arrived in Peru to post when there wasn’t much that might interest you.

Today was that day because we have spent much of it in airports and planes, transferring from Cusco to Lima and then Lima to Cajamarca – but more of the latter tomorrow.

Sue will make an attempt at judgement and there is a very small (very small!) prize for her declared winner! There may even be prizes for runners-up.

So now is the time for you to share your wildest speculations, best guesses and whatever else you like as you work through our carefully designed questions.

What is the red fruit called in Peru? (Hint: sounds like a fish)
What is this?
Who lives here?
What is this contraption used for?
What are these and how are they used?
What is this made from? Any guess as to when?
Any idea what these processed foods are and how do you cook them?
What is this dish? (Yes, we ordered it)
What is this contraption for? (Hint – ultimately it helps with communion)

  1. Bloody hell you’ve not made it easy. The fruit is a prickly pear but I looked up what it’s called in Peru – tuna. Initially I thought the jewellery was for someone with a very small neck but I think it might be a nose ring of some sort. Who lives here could be all manner of (quite small) things which like cooking. So I guess that puts random animals or insects out of the game. No idea. The next thing holds water. Then there are cactus spikes. Stabbing small enemies? I know the necklace – puts hand up. It’s a sea snail Moche necklace.

Processed food?! Looks like pebbles. Or very old potatoes. The cooked thing is cuy (guinea pig).
Other than mantelpiece ornaments I have no idea what the three lovely ceramic pieces are for. Vases for one flower? Salt shaker (the one on the right). And telling me something is used for communion doesn’t help me much!

    1. Excellent and very speedy response! M is in the process of publishing the answers but I think you got 6 of the 10 right!

  2. A great quizz – measured by myself in terms of how few I’m likely to get. But someone has to support the winner so I’m volunteering for this role. the 3-some look like drinking vessels. The cone might be for funneling honey… many of the others: others’ guesses will be better than mine! great pictures!

    1. Very public spirited of you Gabriele and you’re correct in the none of your answers are correct. A small ( v small ) consolation prize will be awarded.

  3. Tuna. Fancy nosepiece. A herbalist? Some kind of fermentation? Cochineal beetles for red dye? Vegetable curls…for Easter, wedding, birthday…? or noise-cancelling ear plugs. These look like food the body has processed and excreted. Guinea-pig (large). Jugs for water or lethal local spirits? Magician’s saw-woman-in-half kit.

    1. Oh well done, excellent responses, four of which are completely correct and the others made me laugh!

  4. Completely stumped! I did consider facetious answers but decided it would be kinder to spare you that. I’ll wait patiently for the answers.
