These are all amazing and very like a lot of the stuff we saw in northern Peru. Not wanting to be a pedantic bore (but being one anyway) can you say more than ‘pre hispanic’? Are there particular cultures that are named? In Peru the absolute stand out were the Moche.
The first lot are Olmec. Then cultures from around Colima and Veracruz. They were not Mayan or cultures from Oaxaca (Mixtec, Zapotec). The museum was a private collection by an artist, Rufino Tamayo (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Museo_Rufino_Tamayo,_Oaxaca) and the colours behind were those he used in his work.
No apologies needed – I find these absolutely fascinating too!
Good! We will find more then to put up.
I like the background colours. The artefacts look really wonderful
The museum deliberately chose to display these as pieces of art hence the lovely colours I think – one of the best collections we’ve seen.
They are so humorous and jolly.. not often that ancient artefacts are. As for placing them on the colours, that just adds to the fun. Delightful.
Completely agree – so many of them just make you smile. In terms of size, many of these were small – no more than 6 inches with the breastfeeding figure about 4inches – the details and emotion conveyed are really moving.
How big are they?
Amazing things – and they do stand out against that coloured background – do we know if they were religious artefacts or decorative objects?
Well, I suspect we don’t know really ( I mean M and me- the archeological establishment almost certainly has a view). Quite a lot of them I think we’re found in tombs – no idea if people had them in their homes. All in all, this wasn’t a very helpful response, was it?
gorgeous. I enjoy seeing these a lot. thanks. Carry on… xx
Will do, Elizabeth – these figures are irresistible
They’re terrific, love them Ax
I find them incredibly engaging and some v moving
Steve thinks the penultimate one looks like me – personally I think he should have gone to Specsavers although there is something about the eyes when I’ve had too much to drink! All in all what a marvellous collections of cheerful people
So that’s what you look like when you’ve had too much to drink!
Well, it is a very smiley and engaging figure so perhaps he’s right? I love these little chaps ( and chapesses)
