Each night, many musicians play loud music in the main square in Oaxaca and, if it’s the right kind of music (samba, rumba, etc), people out shopping or walking about just stop and dance on the pavement. Here is one of last night’s performances, with dancers clearly taking a break from ordinary life.
Wonderful. This happens in China, too – crowds of couples ballroom dancing in parks and squares.
I think it happens in Hanoi too but v early in the morning
And where are you two?
Watching, of course ( as were many others) and moving sort of from foot to foot in time with the music…
How’s your salsa coming along then? G
Not well – skill and grace of dancers in Oaxaca a bit intimidating.
Glad to see the average age of the dancers looks more our end – obviously you’re never too old is a Mexican saying!
Yes, indeed – this session was full of couples who’d clearly been dancing together for years ( and had, in my view, been practising too)
Does the band play for free or is it a municipal thing, do you think?
Suspect it’s arranged by some bit of the city authorities – no money was being sought from those watching or dancing. This session in particular was also full of people specially dressed up ( smart trousers, silk dresses, heels) so a real night out.
Tell me you two danced?
Well, not precisely – I moved from foot to foot ( diffident English stuff) and M took pictures ( probably rhythmically though I’m not completely sure).
VERY belatedly (have been without wifi) wonderful to see all these photos and hear your stories. Sounds like you’re having a wonderful time! I especially loved these dancers. Reminds me of an experience in China of coming upon a large group of older women doing a kind of exercise dance class on the street at night with a ghetto blaster, grandchildren joining in, and obviously having a ball.
