The benefactor of Metsovo (read the previous blog to read about him) left the town an art gallery of 19th and 20th century Greek art, which we loved. He also endowed his family house as a folk museum, which showed how the wealthy lived in Metsovo until fairly recently. Unfortunately, the town has also invested in some ghastly bronzes so we had to include them too.
The embroidered tapestries look very much like the ones that are made in Barmer/Jaisalmer area
Yes, they certainly don’t look whatever we think of as Greek. We thought they looked v Turkish though didn’t say so as the Ottoman ‘occupation ‘ still a slightly sore point….
I’ve just googled Peggy Kliafa – never heard of her and that shield is such an amazing work – so at least one person in Metsovo’s art acquisition department managed to leaven the hideous bronzes with something decent. BTW looks like you are having amazing weather – gorgeous blue skies in every picture you post!
Many of the works in the Art Gallery were lovely – all 19th and 20th century Greek artists. The bronze bears and sturdy bronze peasants, on the other hand, almost certainly commissioned by the local Mayor….
