We stopped at a tiny little neolithic lake ‘eco-museum’ which had been excavated since the 1990s by a series of (named) professors of archaeology and architecture. We hit it just at the moment when someone was giving a long and shouty lecture in Greek to a group of bored-looking families who just wanted to get on and go in the reconstructed huts. Unfortunately, the greatest find was not there – said to be a tablet of considerable academic debate. One interpretation is that it’s the earliest ever script (by far) – another is that it’s a chopping board. But the site was lovely and the artefacts astonishing given that they come from 5,500 BCE – 3,000 BCE.

Yes, it’s the chopping board that does it for me, though struggle slightly with Neolithic man or woman chopping things finely. Just prejudice on my part
